Covenanter Grave Balmaghie (Short) #History #Scotland

George Short Covenanter 1685

George Short, Balmaghie parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Died 1685.

Shields in 1690:
‘Item the said Laird of Lagg, with the Earle of Anandale, having Command of some Troups of Heretors, pursued another David Halyday and George Short, and apprehended and sht them, under the cloud of Night, in the Paroch of Wynhame in Galloway, Anno, 1685.’ (Shields, A Short Memorial, 38.)

Covenanter George Short

Stone erected 1702-1714. Inscription:

‘Here lyes George Short who was pursued and taken and instantly shot to death under cloud of night in the parish of Tongueland by Grier of Lag and the Earle of Anandale because of his adherence to Scotlands Reformation Covenants National and Solemn League 1685.’

No poem.

The inscription is directly based on Shields, but corrects the parish of his death from Twynholm to Tongland.

The grave was recorded the first edition of Cloud of Witnesses (1714), but those pages are missing in the copy held by the National Library of Scotland. The following lines come from the second edition of 1720, which copied the first edition:
‘In the church-yard of Balmaghie, upon the body of George Short, shot by the same laird of Lagg, Anno 1685.’
