Andrew Hislop, Craighaugh, Eskdalemuir parish, Dumfriesshire. Died 1685.

Shields in 1690:
‘Sir James Johnstoun of Westerhall, caused apprehend Andrew Hislop in the parish of Hutton in Anandale delivered him up to Claverhouse, and never rested untill he got him shot by Claverhouse his Troupers; Claverhouse would have delayed it, but Westerhall was so urgent, that Claverhouse was heard say, This Mans blood shall be upon Westerhall, May, 1685.’ (A Short Memorial, 37.)

Stone erected in 1702. It is the earliest dated gravestone. Inscription:
‘Here lyes Andr. Hislop martyr shot dead upon this place by Sir James Johnston of Westerhall and John Graham of Claverhouse for adhering to the Word of God, Christ’s kingly government in his house and the Covenanted work of Reformation, against tyranny, pergury, and prelacy May 12 1685. Rev 12. 11.’

‘Halt, passenger, one word with thee or two
why I ly here wouldest thou truly know
by wicked hands, hands cruel and unjust
without all law my life from me they thrust
& being dead they left me on this spot,
& for burial this same place I got.
Truths friends in Eskdale now triumph ther lot.
Viz, the faithful, for my seal [that] got. 1702.’

Grave record in Cloud of Witnesses (1st edition, 1714, 287.):
‘On the Grave-stone of Andrew Hyslop lying in Craick haugh in Eskdalemoor, being the place where he was shot by Claver house and Sir James Johnstoun of Wester hall.’
