William Graham, Crossmichael, Crossmichael parish, Kirkcudbrightshire. Died 1682.

Shields:
‘John Graham of Claverhouse, Viscount of Dundee, in the Year 1682, with a party of his Troup, pursued William Graham in the parish of ——– in Galloway, making his escape from his Mothers house, and overtaking him, instantly shot him dead.’ (Shields, A Short Memorial, 34.)

Stone erected 1702-1714. Inscription:
‘Here lyes William Graham who makeing his escape from his mothers house was pursued taken and instantly shot dead by a party of Claverhouse’s troop for his adherence to Scotlands Reformation Covenants National and Solemn League 1682.’

The grave was recorded the first edition of Cloud of Witnesses (1714), but those pages are missing in the copy held by the National Library of Scotland. The following lines come from the second edition of 1720, which copied the first edition:
‘Item, upon the corps of William Graham, who was shot while making his escape from his mother’s house, by a party of Claverhouse’s troop, Anno 1682.’
