The Secret of Society Holm and Kate’s Wood #History #Scotland
Is this where Covenanters met in secret and prayed?
According to the OS Name Book, Society Holm lies:
‘A Small tract of land farm of Bogue and situate within Kates Wood . It is at present planted with Fir trees & during the period of the Scottish persecution, the Covenanters had often assembled on it for worship hence the name.’
The entry for Kate’s Wood also has a Covenanting connection in tradition:
‘A Considerable tract of [woodland] on the farm of Bogue the wood of which Consists of Oak, Fir & Beech. It [takes] its name in Consequence of [a] Woman named Katrine [who] had lived adjacent to it [in] the period of the Scottish persecution [of the 1680s], at which time [she] often resorted into this Wood & prayed for the [Cause] of the persecuted Church.’
Kate’s Hill, beside Kate’s Wood, is also said to be named after her.
