Fifteenth General Meeting of the Cameronians in 1697 #History #Scotland


15 General Meeting at Crawfordjohn, 20 October, 1697.
William Stuart in Galloway’s suspension is lifted, but with a formal protestation from the society in Barony parish that Stuart had stated to the last general meeting ‘that there was no evil in the [mason] word or Syn as to the matter of it’.

Robert Knox is to write a letter to friends in Ireland to inform them ‘we are frustrated of our present design in sending some of our number to them at the time by reason of the throng of affairs’. Also Knox was to give the General Meeting ‘a relation’ of how their friends in Ireland were ‘anent the present Testimony’.

Members were chosen for a forthcoming conference with the Eskdale societies.

The committee was elected:

James Currie [in Pentland, for Edinburgh?].
John Cran [for Lanarkshire?].
James Reid [in Barony parish?].
Robert Hamilton [for Lanarkshire?]
Mr. James Kid [for the Lothians].
Mr. Robert Smith.
James Donaldson, in Eskdalemuir parish. [Eskdale]
Hector[? Perhaps Ninian?] Oliphant. [Tweeddale?]
David Jardine, [in Applegarth parish, Annandale].
James Mundell [in Nithsdale].
Thomas Kirk.
John Clark [for Galloway].
Robert Knox.
William Millar.
