Renwick’s Well

An intriguing placename found on the OS map is Renwick’s Well in Applegarth parish, Annandale, Dunfriesshire.

Renwick's Well

Does it refer to the United Societies’ preacher, James Renwick? Wells/springs were sometimes linked in later tradition to the Covenanters, but Renwick’s Well has no known connection to the preacher. Unlike Alexander Peden, James Renwick was rarely linked in popular tradition to places. A few of them are close to his home in Glencairn parish.

According to the mid nineteenth century OS name book the name was ‘applied to a Spring on the farm of Auchenroddan, from which flows a copious supply of pure spring water.’

Today, it is located in the Auchenroddan Forest.
