The Scottish Regiments, the Covenanters and the Killing Times

Highlanders

Dealing with insurgencies has long been part of a soldier’s life, but what has recently happened in Afghanistan, Iraq and Ireland is part of a far older story for the Scottish regiments of the British Army. In the 1680s, many Scottish soldiers were involved in suppressing the Covenanters and took part in the Killing Times.

Which Scottish regiments were involved in the conflict with the Covenanters? Three regiments can still lay claim to that history: The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, The Scots Guards and 2 SCOTS.

General Thomas Dalyell’s Regiment of Dragoons, aka. His Majesty’s Regiment of Dragoons, went on to become the Royal Scots Greys which in turn was incorporated into the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (SCOTS DG).

Colonel James Douglas’s Regiment of Foot Guards, aka. His Majesty’s Regiment of Foot Guards, is now known as the Scots Guards (SG).

The Earl of Mar’s Regiment of Foot later became known as the Royal Scots Fusiliers which were in turn  incorporated into the Royal Highland Fusiliers that now form the 2nd Battalion of The Royal Regiment of Scotland (2 SCOTS).

Two of the cavalry regiments involved in the conflict were later disbanded.

John Graham of Claverhouse’s Regiment of Horse, aka. King’s Regiment of Horse, was disbanded soon after the Revolution in 1689.

The small unit of Life Guards later became the 4th troop of Horse Guards, but they were disbanded in 1746.

I am planning on making the Covenanters a big feature in Granny Irene’s Guide to the Afterlife Revenge Part 2. In particular I will be looking at Margaret Wilson, so I found this article quite timely!!
