William Speirs Bruce in Antarctica: Neil Oliver and The Last Explorers Clip

I’ve been fascinated by the story of William Speirs Bruce and the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition for many years. It’s one of the great untold stories. I worked up the outline for this programme directed by Colin Murray.

Episode 2 of 4

Duration: 1 hour

Neil Oliver re-traces the expeditions of four Scottish explorers who planted ideas rather than flags – ideas that shaped the modern world we know today. Following in the footsteps of a scientific explorer who has become all but lost to history, Neil charts the remarkable story of William Speirs Bruce, one of Britain’s great, but least-known explorers. Bruce set out to conquer Antarctica, not for imperial glory, but to advance scientific knowledge in an era when exploration had become harnessed to national prestige.

  1. Hi there,

My wife’s great uncle; Alastair Ross was the taxidermist aboard the Scotia on the 1902 -1904 expedition. We have been trying to raise the profile of this exceptional group of Antarctic explorers for a few years now after the discovery of Alastair’s RSGS medal and his postcards home from the voyage which were in his old sea trunk that we inherited. We have a lot of background information on him and his family that we would like to share if it were of interest to anyone. Looking forward to seeing the film.
